Everything that the devil Marco Odermatt is currently tackling, he succeeds: For the very first time he started a race on the legendary Lauberhorn, it was his baptism of fire. And this season’s outstanding giant slalom driver also delivered in the first Super-G in Wengen in 28 years: the 24-year-old set the new best time with start number 7. “Yeah!” He shouted at the finish. “I’m surprised by my trip myself. Sure, I have made up my mind before the race. But I was more motivated than I was before the Super-G. Then you get a lead of almost a second, that’s really cool, ”Odermatt later told SRF.
After Alexander Kilde, who had previously won three Super-Gs in a row, was unable to oust Odermatt from the lead – he finished second, the Swiss clenched his fist in the finish area. For him it was the fourth Super G win of his career. Thanks to this success, Odermatt is also expanding its already comfortable lead in the overall classification. Third place in the Super-G in Wengen was Matthias Mayer.
Rogentin also drives well
Beat Feuz, who will probably focus on the two Lauberhorn runs on Friday and Saturday, finished 24th. Stefan Rogentin, who recently had strong Super-G performances, was able to build on that and finished eleventh. Niels Hintermann was a good 14th, Loïc Meillard followed in 15th.
In 1994 a Super-G was held for the first time on the Lauberhorn. This was won by the Austrian Marc Girardelli, who started for Luxembourg. Also this time some Austrians were contenders for victory. The double world champion from 2021 in Cortina, Vincent Kriechmayr, was able to travel to Wengen after his corona illness after five days of quarantine on Wednesday and took part in the race – without any preparation.
