Homeschooling: How digital education should improve in Germany

Angela Merkel relies on a new platform to support schools

More

Angela Merkel would like to finally promote school education in the digital area – a digital summit is to set new accents.

Schools have reopened in many federal states – despite the ongoing risk of a pandemic. Even after almost a year of homeschooling, Germany is still not doing very well when it comes to digital education, as annoyed parents, teachers and students can confirm. Chancellor Angela Merkel and Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek want to change that now and are calling for an education-digital dialogue today.

Hope bearer "digital educational space"

Above all, a "digital education space" should improve the situation. For many affected students this is little consolation: They are especially under pressure when poor internet connections or overloaded school servers make learning impossible. But here too, the Chancellor wants to improve: "Together we will continue to work on building digital infrastructures and promoting the acquisition of digital skills for learners and teachers (…)", wrote the Federal Ministry of Research in a press release. It remains to be seen what actions will follow this intention.

Digital learning – even after Corona

One thing is certain: even after the corona pandemic, digital learning will remain an important part of everyday school life. In order to help schools switch to more digitization, the new "SchulTransform" platform is intended to support school principals in recognizing and initiating the necessary steps. "Digitization means more than just integrating technology," Research Minister Karliczek explains the project. "We want to ensure that schools exchange experiences with one another." How exactly this new system should work and how exactly the still weak digital infrastructure of the schools will be strengthened is still unclear – and for many students a measure that comes several months too late.
