It’s now official: you no longer have to say “streamer” but “live player”. The information comes straight from the Official Journal, which relayed on May 29 the translations of the French Language Enrichment Committee of English-language terms related to video games. As usual, the proposed words are rather ridiculous.
It would almost become a date. Each month the Commission for the enrichment of the French language publishes its official translations of technical terms, sometimes coming from scientific circles and very often English-speaking. Some of them are real nuggets. We remember in particular the translation of smartphone, which we must now call “multifunction mobile” – a step that we still have a little trouble taking in writing, me culpa.
More recently, DDOS attacks have been given the same treatment, with an extended French term: collective attacks by service saturation. But up to now, the Commission has paid very little attention in the world of video games. Error now corrected with twenty new very French words, some of which will not fail to make some teeth cringe. The one that makes the most reaction on social networks is undoubtedly “streamer”, now “live player”. Which, it must be admitted, is a vulgar amputation of the true profession of creators on Twitch, who for several years now have not been content to film themselves playing a video game. We also find the personal selection of the editorial staff, namely “retrogaming” which becomes “retrogaming”a word that is hard to describe as pretty.

In the list posted below, we can also come across the awesome “player pairing” supposed to designate the matchmaking system, or even the magnificent “cloud video game” which stems from cloud gaming.
