Video games in France: a reform of the tax credit and the funds of the France 2030 plan to become a European leader

the Video game tax credit exists since 2008 and has been reformed several times since. Its latest form allowed validated projects to enjoy a recovery of production expenses of 30%, within the limit of 6 million euros per company and per year. The method of selecting the games benefiting from this aid was however very restrictive, the CNC attributing it only to experiences related to the narration.

Things will soon change, thanks to a new reform validated by the Secretary of State for digital, Cédric O, which must be notified to the European Comission in the players who come. The award scale for the CIJV will be “more readable, more inclusive and more adapted to the industry”, in order to “strengthen the innovation effect” by supporting projects that develop very quickly, or that shine by their artistic direction or their musical atmosphere. This should in particular allow certain mobile games, which are not often praised for their scenario, to benefit from it.

The authorized amounts will not change for the moment, however, but the government will still give another boost to the video game sector. It will allow him to benefit from the investment plan France 2030, a fund of 30 billion euros shared by 2026 aimed at supporting industrial competitiveness and future technologies. However, the amount and distribution of the investment remain to be defined. The objective is clear: within 5 years, become the leader in video games in Europe, overtaking the United Kingdom and Germany. See you in 2027 to see if the bet is successful.
