Video games: Tesco will stop selling boxed games in the UK

The video game market is constantly evolving and, in recent years, it is the sales of digital games that are exploding, to the detriment of physical editions. Resellers try to fight by offering more varied products, such as figurines, but others prefer to let go.

As reported GamesIndustry.biz, supermarkets Tescoa huge chain in the UK, will stop selling physical video games in their 2,800 stores. Once the current stocks are emptied, the shelves will be left free for other products that have nothing to do. The only thing that will remain related to the video game will be the prepaid cards for the Playstation Store, Microsoft Store, eShop Or Google Play Store for example, or even virtual currency cards for certain titles such as V Bucks of Fortnite. An announcement that comes after that of the closure of the 35 shops GameStop in Ireland.

Nick Arran, Head of GAME, explains that the COVID-19 pandemic has completely disrupted the market across the Channel. Before 2020, 45% of video game purchases were digital, a figure that has exploded to 75% now. GamesIndustry explains that in the UK, physical sales of Diablo IV, Final Fantasy XVI, Street Fighter 6 and F1 23 represent only 18% of total sales.

The British have clearly given in to the call of digital, remains to be seen whether the trend will follow in other countries of the world. In France, Micromania keep your head above water and offer, for example, to pre-order EA Sports FC 24 to 79.99 €with a 20€ reduction by bringing back your old FIFA 23.
