Video: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – Kater wants to become mayor

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
No kidding: This cat wants to become mayor

Hangover "Quarky": As a candidate, he would stand for a policy that purrs.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania a tomcat is actually applying for the office of mayor. Despite a setback, his owner wants to continue fighting for his pet – and pave the way for him to the town hall.

What happened?

In the city of Demmin (Mecklenburg Lake District), the cat Quarky would like to become mayor – at least if his owner Thorsten Lohr has his way, who leads the election campaign for his pet.

A hangover as mayor? That's absurd.

At first glance, maybe yes, but at second glance? After all, a hangover has never covered up streets with election posters, embezzled taxpayers money, enforced racist policies, enforced poor education policies, or harmed his city with embarrassing affairs. Human mayors have done this so many times that it is amazing that they are still eligible for election. And let's be honest, who would we rather see at the opening of a new street or library: a normal politician or a friendly cat.

These are good reasons – can I actually vote the hangover to town hall?

There is currently still a small hurdle; the still incumbent mayor unfortunately did not approve the candidacy.

Because he's a bad loser?

No, because every candidate has to sign his application himself, which the cat has missed somehow. Also, Quarky is not of legal age, which I admit is a problem.

So not a mayor hangover after all?

The last word has not yet been spoken – owner Torsten Lohr would like to take his Quarky to court and cites lawyers in Greifswald and Hamburg who have already offered him free support.

Okay, somehow it's not funny anymore. What's the nonsense?

Cat owner Lohr is not only interested in the media attention that his cat is enjoying now, but also in fueling the political dialogue in his city. In his hometown Demmin there is a lack of political participation and open exchange. At least the application alone attracted attention and discussions, says Lohr.

What if the cat still wins in some roundabout way?

That will probably not happen, but in a theoretical emergency it is not a problem either: In the US state of Alaska, a cat was mayor of a small village for 20 years without hissing or scratching. And Quarky, according to its owner, also praises a policy of "velvet paws and retracted claws".
