Satellite images show Russian ship barrier at Crimean Bridge

Ukraine has repeatedly attacked the Crimean Bridge with drones. The Kremlin is now reacting. Satellite images apparently show seven ships on parts of the bridge. Observers suspect that these should serve as protection against further attacks.

Russia secures part of its bridge to the occupied Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. Satellite imagery due to a barrier of ships. Photos published online show a chain of seven larger vessels anchored in front of the part of the bridge connecting the island of Tusla and the Russian mainland.

According to observers, this should serve as protection against possible Ukrainian attacks with sea drones. The US foreign broadcaster RFE/RL showed the photos from the satellite company Planet.com, which are said to be from the previous day. Photos were also circulated on Platform X (formerly Twitter) showing the construction of the barrier between August 19 and 26.

The military intelligence service of Ukraine (HUR) announced last week that the Russians sank at least six barges, open barges without their own propulsion, on the south side of the bridge. Barrier fences should therefore be erected between the ships. This information cannot be independently verified. The barrier does not block the main channel under the bridge from the Black Sea to the Sea of Azov.

Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for around 18 months. The liberation of the Black Sea Peninsula crime annexed by Russia in 2014 is a prime goal of Ukraine’s national defense. The bridge from the Russian mainland to Crimea is extremely important for supplying the peninsula and the Russian troops in southern Ukraine. The bridge was therefore repeatedly attacked by Kiev.
