If growth was up at the end of the year, as estimated by INSEE in its latest note, economic forecasts are darker for the coming months. The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies has announced that the first half of 2022 should be marked by the resumption of inflation, around 2.7% according to its forecasts.

This price increase should therefore have repercussions in many areas, detailed below.

Inflation should particularly concern, according to INSEE, food. On the raw materials side, this increase is not new. In one year, the price of wheat has indeed soared, increasing by nearly 65%. With the economy recovering, prices of oil or cocoa are also on the rise.

“Everyone needs everything at the same time and that has two effects. The first is that there is scarcity, by definition. And the second thing is that, all we need, what our companies need costs more “, explains Jean-Philippe André, president of the national association of food industries, in the video of the 20H of TF1 at the top of this article.

Successive increases in the prices of agricultural raw materials, especially cereals, have resulted in recent and significant increases in production prices, which are expected to begin to have repercussions on consumer prices.

Bread or pasta, up 8% for private labels, could see their prices continue to rise in the coming months. “Wheat has increased, butter has increased, many other raw materials have increased. Suddenly, we are forced to face a lack of turnover”, notes the baker David Moutoussamy in the TF1 report. But the reasons for these increases are diverse.

In the case Coffee for example, crops were initially poor in Brazil due to a lack of rain. To this scarcity of production, leading to an increase in prices, it was necessary to add an increase in those of transport and packaging. “On the kilo grain, we go from 19 to 22 euros, and on the final cup, it’s an increase of 3-5 cents. Today, this increase, if I do not pass it on to the purchase price final, I can’t live “, affirms Anne Caron, president of the company “Café Caron”.

Agricultural commodities are not the only ones to have seen their prices rise. Those of industrial raw materials are also affected by this inflation. In the case cotton, its price soars and reached its highest level in 10 years, well exceeding 1 dollar per pound in October 2021.

This increase should therefore also have an impact on the cost. clothes. In general, the prices of manufactured products would go from an evolution over one year of 0.8% in November 2021 to 1.8% in June 2022. Long-term prices should therefore increase throughout the first half of 2022 of after INSEE estimates, except during the month of January due to winter sales.

Also concerned, the sectors of automobile and of household appliances. In addition to causing the rise in the prices of industrial raw materials, and in particular metals, these areas reflect the shortage of semiconductors. These electronic chips, omnipresent in recent cars, are essential for starting vehicles.

Manufacturers are no longer able to deliver customers on time. Due to a lack of electronic components, 8 million vehicles should therefore be missing in 2021. The situation should not improve next year, this crisis could extend until 2023.

Inflation in recent months has been mainly driven by energy prices according to INSEE, again in a context of global economic recovery. However, if inflation should stay above 2.6% over one year, the contribution of energy prices would remain significant, but would decrease. If the forecasts are confirmed, the prices at the pump could drop by ten cents per liter as early as next month.
