These devices installed in a car are already present in the department but piloted by the police: two for the gendarmerie, one for the police. They will appear in private management, with 45 radars on board in New Aquitaine. The prefecture did not wish to specify the number of these new “flashers” in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

It was GSR, a subsidiary of the Geos group, which won the contract in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. “The company is not compensated for the number of violations noted, specifies the prefect of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Éric Spitz. It is paid as a flat rate according to the number of kilometers travelled. It does not have access to the radar system, which is autonomous, nor to the file. The information is sent directly to a judicial police officer who verbalizes.

Private on-board radars will have routes fixed in advance, which may concern the entire road network, from the municipal road to the motorway network. The on-board radar only checks the speed. He can catch in the act of vehicles traveling up to three lanes to his left and those in the opposite direction. “It will only flash if the speed of the vehicle concerned is greater than 10 km / hour the maximum authorized speed”, specifies the prefect.

According to Éric Spitz, these new radars will spend “five times longer on the road” than the on-board radars of the police. And for good reason, the radars with private driver will be able to circulate 365 days a year. The time range will also be extended, while an on-board police or gendarmerie radar spends an average of one and a half hours on the road per day.

“The police will be able to focus on interception missions that require interception of the driver, such as blood alcohol and narcotics controls,” adds the prefect.

According to figures from the prefecture, there were 41 fatal accidents in 2021 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. A figure up compared to 2020, a year marked by sanitary confinements (27 deaths) but also compared to 2019 (39 deaths).

“We must not forget that for each death on the road, there are four seriously injured, highlights the prefect. It breaks up families and doesn’t always happen to others.
