For years, a stalker could follow everything that was happening on a 23-year-old's smartphone. When she didn't return his advances, he killed her.

A terrible story that shows how easily strangers can have access to our most intimate data: flight attendant Sophie N. had probably only given her cell phone for a short time, probably directly into the hands of her stalker, whom she only called "nice" at the time Colleagues "knew. Your later murderer could overhear every phone call for years, look at every photo and read every chat.

Spyware on the cell phone – the underestimated danger

According to the IT security service Kaspersky, there were 1,547 registered cases of smartphones infected with spyware last year alone. The software, which can be purchased completely legally, not only forwards messages and photos, but also the navigation data that shows the position of the cell phone on a map. Sophie's persecutor always knew where she was and could make her life hell. Even when the young woman stayed with her mother, he was promptly there and terrorized her by ringing the doorbell at night.

Hidden program that is hard to find

It never occurred to anyone to take a second look at their smartphone: Spyware specializes in pretending to be as harmless as possible. However, she cannot hide completely. Possible warning signs include a sudden drop in battery power and a sudden increase in data consumption – both consequences of the fact that the software is continuously forwarding data. If you want to be on the safe side, you can also install security software that detects spyware immediately.

Cowardly murder after a long obsession

The stalker's obsession turned into pure hatred after rejection, which ultimately led to murder. Sophie herself had no suspicions until the very end – the young man was too unimportant, who simply played no role in her life and was secretly her constant companion. Now the murderer has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hanover regional court.
