from Microsoft, Teams
gives us some pretty good news.

In an effort to optimize the Teams user experience, Microsoft wants to ensure optimal resource management to reduce energy consumption during meetings.

Teams seeks to reduce its consumption

Launched several years ago, the American giant’s collaborative communication platform is particularly popular with professionals. And in a context where teleworking has exploded, it is now proving very useful for remote calls and meetings. Now, Microsoft wants to focus on another aspect of its application: resource optimization.

In other words, the company has demonstrated its desire to reduce the energy consumption of Teams, whatever your device and whatever your configuration. Microsoft has concentrated its forces on the energy-intensive part of its application, namely group video calls or screen sharing. And by identifying the source of the “problem”, after numerous phases of testing, the company managed to reduce energy consumption by up to 50% for video calls exceeding ten users.

To do this, the giant explains that it has focused on many technical aspects: optimizing the camera (minimizing the stress on the processor when it is active), improving configurations or even consolidation of video rendering and unification of streams, requiring fewer operations than before. In addition to promoting power consumption, this also improves the overall stability of Teams.

Thus, this process results in a significant reduction in the energy requirements requested by Teams. And the good news is that Microsoft has announced that it will continue its efforts to further reduce the energy consumption of its application.
