Videoconferencing: Webex is coming to Apple CarPlay!

Joining a Webex meeting on the go will soon be easier and easier. Cisco, the publisher of the collaborative work platform, has just added a “Move to Mobile” function which allows you to easily switch your Webex session from your computer to your mobile device by scanning a QR code using your phone’s camera. That’s not all: an upcoming update to Webex Meetings for iPhone should allow you to use Apple’s CarPlay platform in your vehicle to join a Webex meeting.

As a reminder, many car manufacturers support Apple’s CarPlay platform. Once your iPhone is connected to your vehicle’s infotainment system, you’ll see a familiar iPhone-like interface with access to Apple’s apps like Maps, Messages, and Music, as well as third-party apps which added support for CarPlay.

With Webex’s CarPlay support, you won’t have to try to manage the call using your iPhone’s app. Instead, you’ll be able to interact with your car’s touchscreen to join or leave a call, as well as view your upcoming schedule.

Launch scheduled for August

The app will be updated in August to give you access to previously recorded meetings, so you can catch up on anything you may have missed. “We are delighted with this news with Apple. As we move towards hybrid working, one of the areas where we want to eliminate friction, even more, is what happens when you have to restart your meeting,” said Jeetu Patel, vice- executive chairman and general manager of security and collaboration, when the addition was announced.

“I think we’ve all had the experience of starting a meeting on our computer, but having to leave the house for one reason or another and feeling tethered to our desk or having to join the meeting from a secondary device. Now you can use Move to Mobile to take your meeting directly to your phone, and from there, you transfer the call to CarPlay,” said the leader.

This new offer fills a “hole in the racket” regularly criticized at Webex. CarPlay support seems like an obvious feature that should have been in Webex Meetings from the start, allowing you to safely join and manage your meetings on the go without having to touch your iPhone.
