Vienna Terror Memorial Day – Chancellor: “Wounds are deep & still hurt”

Depressing mood in Vienna: On the anniversary of the devastating terrorist attack on November 2nd, old wounds opened again. At a church service in the Ruprechtskirche, the head of state and Cardinal Christoph Schönborn commemorated the victims. “The wounds are deep and still hurt,” said Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg.

The Chancellor spoke about the “brutal face” of terror, but also emphasized that terrorism should not and will not succeed in “dividing us”.

Sobotka: “Austria is no longer a blank spot”
National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka said that Austria was no longer a blank spot on the international map of terrorism.

Van der Bellen to relatives of the victims: “We feel for you”
Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen addressed the relatives of the victims directly: “Please accept our sympathy, we feel for you.” He deliberately mentioned the names of the four victims.

The memorial event in the Ruprechtskirche was musically accompanied by those young musicians who had rehearsed there at the hour of the attack a year ago. The number of participants was very limited, relatives, survivors and neighbors could not find a place.
