In Vikings: Valhalla, a series derived from Vikings available on Netflix, Freydis Eriksdotter is the great main heroine. This character played by Frida Gustavsson is the daughter of Erik the Red and the sister of Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett). She comes from the Green Land and lands in Kattegat with her brother and his friends to take revenge on a Viking who raped her and marked her with a cross on her back.

She will get closer to Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter) but also to Jarl Estrid Haakon (Caroline Henderson), who reigns over Kattegat, and who will guide her to the Temple of Uppsala so that she becomes a formidable warrior. Freydis will take part in the protection of Kattegat from the invasion of Christian Vikings led by Olaf Haraldsson (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) and Earl Kåre (Asbjørn Krogh).

Freydis, a brave and dangerous warrior

Daughter of Erik the Red and sister of Leif Erikson, Freydis Eriksdotter is described in The Greenlanders Saga as a dominating, fiery and determined woman. The writings report that she was a fearless and admirable warrior who commanded as much admiration as fear. Very courageous, she followed her brother’s expeditions.

During one of them, Freydis and other Viking warriors came face to face with native people, but the cowardly warriors fled from their attack. Freydis, pregnant at the time, was unable to join them and was caught by the natives. However, she was able to retrieve a sword and turn to face her assailants and frightened them in such a way that they fled in front of her.

In another account of another expedition to Vinland, Freydis was shown to be more cruel and dangerous. The Viking warrior had a disagreement with two Danish brothers present on this trip and persuaded her husband to lead an attack on them and their men. When they were captured, she ordered that they be killed. In her rage, Freydis ended up executing the men and women who were with them with an ax herself. His brother Leif had to deal with this incident when he returned from Greenland.

Freydis Eriksdotter was the heroine of the first part, entitled La saga de Freydis Eriksdottir, of the uchronic novel Civilizations, by Laurent Binet (2019), where she brings iron, horses and European antibodies to pre-Columbian civilizations.
