Vikings – Valhalla on Netflix: What will become of Olaf and Kattegat in Season 2?

The 1st season of “Vikings: Valhalla” has flickered across the screens of Netflix. There are numerous deaths in an epic, blood-soaked final battle for Kattegat – but a rather open ending, which we have already explained and summarized in detail elsewhere: “Vikings Valhalla”: The end of season 1 explained.

In particular, after the grand finale of season 1 of “Vikings: Valhalla”, some viewers are wondering who actually rules over the legendary Viking city of Kattegat. Is it Olaf Haraldsson who marches into Ragnar and Lagertha’s hall with his men? Olaf’s reign seems to be short-lived – and that’s pretty fitting with the true story of the viking.

“Vikings: Valhalla”: Olaf’s reign will probably be short-lived

The cards are reshuffled in the Vikings: Valhalla season 1 finale. Olaf II Haraldsson, the brother of the future king Harald Hardrada, has devised a particularly perfidious plan. He wants to send the Christian fundamentalist Jarl Kåre ahead in order to then take and occupy Kattegat without much bloodshed. With his mostly unharmed men he then wants to rule and become king of Norway.

This plan initially seems to work when Estrid Haakon, the ruler of Kattegat, is badly injured in a hail of arrows and dies. Jarl Kåre is also beheaded by Freydís Eiríksdóttir. Olaf and his men triumphantly enter Ragnar’s hall. But then…

…Knut’s father, Sven Gabelbart, surprisingly shows up with his ships. Olaf and his men are informed of this – and the Vikings appear to be fleeing the freshly approached superior force of hundreds of ships.

“Vikings: Valhalla”: This is how Olaf and Kattegat continue in season 2

It remains to be seen whether Olaf Kattegat will be able to claim at the beginning of the (already confirmed) season 2 of the Viking spin-off. Even if he does fight, there’s no doubt his men will lose heavily this time. And by the way, similar to the “Vikings: Valhalla” figure, the real Olaf II of Norway fared.

According to the Heimskringla saga, a medieval story of the Norwegian kings, Olaf wanted to be king of Norway. He also achieved his goal, invading Denmark and marrying Astrid Olofsdotter, the daughter of the king of Sweden, to strengthen his power.

But a short time later, in 1025, Olaf II lost the Battle of Helgeå. He was defeated by Canute the Great and his Anglo-Danish army and forced into exile. 4 years later Olaf tried to regain his rule – and died in the Battle of Stiklestad.

“Vikings: Valhalla” could very well be based on this story in the 2nd and subsequent seasons. Incidentally, the real Olaf lived longer than the real Sven Gabelbart – which could also be picked up in the future of the Vikings series on Netflix.

However, the parent series “Vikings” already took many historical liberties. Therefore, “Vikings: Valhalla” does not have to strictly follow this historical template.
