Vikings: Why don’t most characters age despite the passage of time?

VIKINGS

Several decades pass in “Vikings”, but hardly any of the main actors or actresses really seem to be aging. Why is that?

  • In “Vikings” several decades pass, but the main characters hardly seem to age.
  • This inconsistency bothers some fans, but why is that? It probably just wasn’t valued.
  • Showrunner Michael Hirst has even admitted that even he doesn’t know how much time is going on in the series.

The historical drama “Vikings” is long overdue, but the series is still very popular. With “Vikings: Valhalla” there is even a sequel series on Netflix, which also enjoys some fans. But as much as the series tries to orientate itself on historical events, “Vikings” is full of inconsistencies.

A common criticism is the fact that the series tells a story that easily spans 30 years – if not more time. Even showrunner Michael Hirst seems to have lost track, as he admits to US magazine Entertainment Weekly.

So it’s hard to say how much time elapses. At the beginning of the series, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel), Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and company are in their late 20s, early 30s. Towards the end of their time on the series, they should be in their mid to late 50s, while Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) is in the finale of the sixth season would even have to be easily over 60.

However, none of the stars look like the character’s age, and Lagertha in particular hasn’t aged at all, despite one time warp after another. It wasn’t until late in the series that she suddenly got white hair, but Katheryn Winnick still doesn’t believe that she’s in her mid-50s.

Why this is so is unclear. Other series put more value on such things, but since Michael Hirst has lost track anyway, you can just accept it as wanted. The series wants to tell exciting stories with the characters you like. The fact that they don’t age shouldn’t bother us.

According to the US magazine Screen Rant, Reddit assumes that the stars were not made older because young actors and actresses are more attractive and thus attract more viewers.

Of course, “Vikings” doesn’t go any further, but fans are currently waiting for “Vikings: Valhalla” season 2. However, a start date in the Netflix novelty program has not yet been announced.
