Transnistria reports explosions after drone attack

Allegedly there are again explosions in the territory of Transnistria. The Interior Ministry of the breakaway republic claims that Ukraine used drones to attack the town of Voronkovo near the border. Kyiv rejects the account and accuses Russia of wanting to expand its war.

The conflict region of Transnistria in the Republic of Moldova, which borders Ukraine, has spoken of renewed attacks on its territory. During the night there were several explosions in the town of Voronkowo, the Interfax news agency reported, citing the region’s Interior Ministry. According to AFP, the site of a former airport is said to have been hit. “At least two drones flew over the military garrison in Voronkovo, four explosions were heard.” Allegedly, two attacks were flown an hour apart. There were no dead or injured. The information could not initially be verified independently. The town of Voronkowo in the Rybnitsa district is around five kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Transnistria, which has broken away from the former Soviet Republic of Moldova since the 1990s, borders the southern Ukrainian region of Odessa. Transnistria is considered pro-Russian, and around 1,500 Russian soldiers are stationed there to monitor the ceasefire and old ammunition depots and weapons depots. The region has been hit by several attacks in recent weeks. Radio masts of a radio station for Russian transmitters were blown up, the building of the local secret service in Tiraspol and allegedly also an object of the Russian troops stationed there were shelled.

The Transnistrian separatists and Russia blame Ukraine for the attacks. Kyiv denies this and sees it as an attempt to increase tensions in Ukraine’s hinterland. A commander of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine recently declared the creation of a “corridor” with access to Transnistria to be one of Moscow’s war goals. Kyiv accuses Russia of trying to destabilize the region in order to create a pretext for military intervention.

Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt is expected in the Republic of Moldova this Saturday to speak to representatives of the government, parliament and aid organizations in view of the war.
