INTERVIEW – Falling sales, rising paper prices, sale of Editis… The president of the National Publishing Union takes stock of the many challenges facing the sector for 2023.
The SNE represents 720 publishing houses. Its boss, Vincent Montagne, also president of Media-Participations (Seuil…), analyzes the challenges of the sector.
LE FIGARO. – In 2022, book sales fell by 5%. Is it worrying for editing?
Vincent MOUNTAIN. – The sector showed resilience, despite the anxiety-provoking atmosphere linked to the war in Ukraine and inflation. And then, 2021 had been an exceptional year… With the closure of theaters or cinemas, and the reclassification of bookstores as essential shops, publishing had benefited from the postponement of cultural purchases… The culture pass had led to a rush of young people to books, especially manga. The sector managed to retain some of the new readers acquired in 2021 last year, in particular for comics and literature. Above all, I remember that in 2022 the level of sales remains 10% higher than in 2019 and 2018. Since the pandemic, the market has returned to a growth dynamic…
