“Virgin River” is full of beloved characters that you would never want to part with. But not everyone will see the end of the Netflix series. Is it going to happen to Doc soon?

- One of the most memorable characters is Doc, the town’s grumpy doctor.
- But Doc’s health concerns us and the fear that he might leave us is well-founded.
Moody, solitary and stingy. At first glance, Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson) from “Virgin River” doesn’t seem like a particularly likeable guy. But if you look behind the facade of the doctor in the small town of Virgin River, you realize that despite his peculiarities, he is a good person.
That’s why the character’s death would probably break the hearts of many fans of the Netflix series, but is the fear for his life even justified?
Unfortunately, yes, because in the 6th volume “In Love with Virgin River: A Virgin River Novel” of the book by author Robyn Carr, Doc dies and the series also seems to slowly lead to the doctor’s death.
Season 5 rapidly accelerates Doc’s macular degeneration diagnosis. Things get so bad that the doctor, who is slowly going blind, hands over most of his work to Cameron (Mark Ghanimé) before even retiring completely.
In a conversation with his wife Hope (Annette O’Toole), Doc reveals that he wants to join a clinical trial that could cure his disease, but also accelerate it. The loss of his eyesight is not a fatal diagnosis, but the concern for Doc is still great.
Doc placed his practice in the safe hands of Cameron and Mel before participating in the study. It is no longer necessary when it comes to the health of city residents. Significant steps have also been taken to bring closure to Doc’s past.
Doc’s life is not completely at peace, but a lot has been resolved and he could leave us without regrets. However, we apparently don’t have to experience this in season 5 yet.
In an interview with US magazine Entertainment Weekly, director Gail Harvey revealed that “Hope and Doc will experience some joy this holiday season.” In addition, a fun surprise should await the two of them in the 2nd half of the 5th season, which starts on November 30, 2023.
