Opinions are divided on the security of Android phones. Some say: virus scanners are not needed, others say exactly the opposite. We clarify.
According to Google, an Android virus scanner is not necessary, after all, Google Play Protect has had a built-in virus scanner that scans the apps in the PlayStore for some time. At first glance, the situation is similar to the situation on Windows, where Windows Defender also has a pre-installed virus scanner and you don’t really need an alternative.
But there is a big difference: Windows Defender offers good protection, Google Play Protect does not, at least the Google virus scanner failed completely in our last test. A current test by AV-Test confirms that the situation has not improved, in which Play Protect only scored 2 points for the protective effect. Google Play Protect is also in last place at our partner AV-Comparatives, with poor protection and the most false alarms on top.
Who needs a virus scanner on Android?
So antivirus software makers are not entirely wrong when they put their own apps in place. Because Google fights again and again with malware in the Play Store. Nevertheless: In our opinion, an Android virus scanner is not necessary if you are only browsing the top apps in the Play Store.
In other cases, you should take precautions with virus protection, especially if you like to try out apps from alternative sources and don’t shy away from exploring every corner of the Internet with your smartphone.
More than virus protection
Curiously, you can also consider an Android virus scanner for other functions that are not primarily related to virus protection. Virus scanner apps combine various security functions in one central location. Android can already do this to some extent, but scatters the settings across the system.
Security functions such as a clear listing of questionable app permissions, theft protection, child safety, surf protection, link monitoring in messengers or WLAN security are clearly summarized in a protection app. This is definitely an added value.
Many protection apps come with additional modules, such as the option of blocking calls and SMS messages, or there are complete system checks that check in one go whether the most important security settings are set correctly. Trend Micro Mobile Security & Antivirus came out top in the CHIP test.
Alternative to the classic virus scanner
Most concerns about Android virus scanners are directed against increased resource consumption. After all, a virus scanner always runs in the background and offers real-time protection. If you don’t want that, you can also install a helper like VirusTotal Mobile.
The app does not run constantly in the background, but instead checks the installed apps for malware if desired. Over 50 virus scanner engines check the apps and quickly provide you with a report. Unknown apps can still be uploaded from the app for the security check.
Important: VirusTotal Mobile does not protect your system, it just makes checking easy. If malware is found, you have to take care of the removal yourself.
Important security measures on Android
What not to do: Get a virus scanner and then throw away all security concerns because the security app will protect you. Don’t fall into this trap and think you’re invulnerable. The virus scanner is just one piece of a security strategy puzzle. The following points are also important:
- App Sources: Do not use dubious app sources. Limit yourself to the Play Store to stock up on apps.
- Check permissions: Always keep an eye on the permissions for apps. If apps are too curious, look for alternatives.
- updates: Install Android and app updates early.
- Unrooted: Refrain from rooting Android smartphones and do not tinker with the system in any other way.
- Password security: You should also use a password manager on Android.
- Device security: You should activate basic security features such as access protection and encryption.
- Backups: Back up your cell phone data regularly.
