Visit to the Hanover Fair
“So techt Germany” meets Siemens and Microsoft

When trains only need one rail, artificial intelligence meets industry and Germany as a location for innovation is being discussed, then it’s Hannover Messe again. At “So techt Deutschland” Siemens boss Busch and Microsoft boss Janik report on the latest trends.

“We connect the real world with the digital world,” says Siemens CEO Roland Busch when visiting “So techt Deutschland” at the German group’s stand at the Hanover Fair. For the manager, innovations also play a central role in dealing with the shortage of skilled workers. “If we don’t fear new technologies, but instead embrace and use them, we will remain competitive. And we even have a chance to bring back work that has migrated to low-cost countries.” Namely when activities no longer have to be done by humans. “But we will always need people,” says Busch – just for other tasks.

One factor here is artificial intelligence. Large language models such as Aleph Alpha or OpenAI are also arriving in the industry. The technology has matured over the years and is now also affordable for companies and medium-sized companies, explains Microsoft Germany boss Marianne Janik. According to this, the possible applications are progressing rapidly, also thanks to German ideas: “So much innovation comes from the open source community in Germany in particular. We shouldn’t make ourselves smaller there,” says Janik.

And yet: Sometimes the innovations at the Hanover Fair can only be recognized at a second, somewhat closer look. A cable car with space for four people, which runs autonomously, battery-powered – and that’s the highlight – only on one track, is one of the eye-catchers in the exhibition halls. The monocab is a university project and is intended to breathe life into disused railway tracks and enable more mobility in rural areas. And since the cab only needs one rail, oncoming traffic is not a problem, in fact it is desirable.

Where the train runs, what the BDI President is demanding for Germany as a business location and how algae can help us to fight the climate crisis can be heard in the report from the Hanover Fair in the ntv podcast “So techt Deutschland”.
