Vivo and Tecno plan to market smartphones with rollable screens. The arrival of this new form factor is planned for the end of 2024.
There rumor of a Galaxy Z Roll been running for several years now. While Samsung is establishing itself as the benchmark in foldable screen smartphones, with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, many experts say that the company is already preparing the next step: devices with rollable screens. If the chaebol has financial and technological means to realize this technology in a consumer product, she could get her hair done on the pole by a major competitor, Vivo.
A sliding or “rollable” smartphone is a phone whose screen can expand (or retract) using a winding system around an axis. It can theoretically take up as little space as a roll of toilet paper. This technology is already visible in high-end OLED screen televisions from LG Electronics. According to The Elec, Vivo has decided to overtake Samsung in the “rollable” market, the lead of the world leader in smartphone sales in the field of foldable devices now being irretrievable. The rumor that the first smartphones with a rollable screen will be marketed in 2024 therefore seems to be confirmed.

Although the Chinese company claims that it will be a world first, we still remember the short adventure of the LG Rollable, a rollable smartphone which despite an innovative concept has not reached the general public. The smartphone designed by Vivo is still only a prototypeand no images have been released yet, but its launch is announced for the end of 2024a year before an equivalent product from Samsung was marketed.
It could be thatanother Chinese company takes priority to everybody. Indeed, Tecno, a brand known for its entry-level mobile phones intended for countries in the South, recently presented the “Phantom Ultimate”, a smartphone with a rollable screen which, “when you press the button on the top of the product, deploys an LTPO screen with a definition of 2296 x 1596 pixels (at 388 PPI) from 6.55 inches to reach 7.11 inches” in a little more of a second.
