Anyone who books a mobile phone tariff including a smartphone with Vodafone will benefit from a cheaper monthly price in the future when two years are up. This is the reason.

A cell phone tariff including a smartphone is common practice. Top smartphones can quickly cost 1,000 euros or more, and a monthly fee for a fraction of the cost is attractive, especially since many providers supposedly offer the hardware for just one euro. This is of course marketing, because with a cell phone in a bundle, the total monthly costs for the provider also increase.
What some customers don’t know, however, is that the cell phone is paid off after 24 months, so the basic fee should actually be dropped. However, this is by no means the case with all providers. It is not uncommon for the contracts to continue at the same price, which is annoying for consumers. It was even more annoying a few years ago when contracts were automatically extended by 12 months.
You can now cancel monthly after the minimum contract term. This is apparently leading to a slow rethink among providers; after all, customers should be retained. While O2 has had two separate contracts for devices and tariffs for many years, the competition has so far relied on a bundle contract.
Vodafone automatically converts contracts
As Wirtschaftswoche reports, Vodafone will continue to do this, but will cancel the additional hardware payment after 24 months. So of course the basic fee falls. The amount of savings varies from tariff to tariff and from smartphone to smartphone. As a rule it is between 10 and 30 euros.
In response to an inquiry from golem.de, Vodafone confirmed that existing customers with corresponding contracts would now automatically be switched to a SIM-only contract after the minimum contract period had expired.
This has two advantages for customers: They are not forced to cancel after two years to avoid higher costs. In addition, they can now flexibly decide for themselves when they would like to book a new cell phone at the same rate. It is now not uncommon for high-quality smartphones in particular to be used for longer than two years because the innovations in the new models are limited.
