The end of the additional cost privilege is approaching and Vodafone is now getting serious. In numerous cities and towns, the cable network operator is now switching off tenants’ TV connections.

Until now, anyone who lives in a rented apartment has usually been able to simply plug the television cable into the socket and connect it to their smart TV, but this will end by July 1, 2024 at the latest. Because of a change in the law, the so-called additional cost privilege will no longer apply. Cable television may then no longer be billed as additional costs. If you want to continue watching TV, you have to sign your own cable contract or find out about alternative reception options – such as watching TV over the Internet.
In some cases, the changeover takes place well before July 1st at the request of the landlord. Anyone who hasn’t taken action so far has nothing to fear for the time being. The largest cable network provider Vodafone tolerated naysayers during a transitional period. But that is now changing. The company is currently sending out a series of press releases with the title “Change in the law: Vodafone is blocking the first cable TV connections in…”, the only thing that changes is the name of the city.
First shutdowns in these cities
According to its own information, in the following cities Vodafone has now blocked the first cable connections in the area of the streets mentioned for tenants who have not concluded their own TV contract with Vodafone:
- Aschaffenburg: Schurzstrasse, Bernhardstrasse, Schergstrasse, Blücherstrasse, Glattbacher Strasse, Bischbergstrasse, Schwindstrasse, Hettingerstrasse, Linkstrasse, Herrleinstrasse, Schurzstrasse, Inselstrasse, Zobelstrasse, Arndtstrasse, am Dreispitz, Berliner Allee, Schneidmühlweg and Schwalbenrainweg
- Coesfeld: Bergstrasse, Letterstrasse, Coesfelder Strasse and Rendelesweg.
- Detmold: Neue Wiese, Lemgoer Straße, Felix-Fechenbach-Straße, Pöppinghauser Straße, Südholzstraße, Georgstraße, Berliner Allee and Brunsweg, Schröderweg and Heckenweg
- Eat: Bargmannstrasse, Kirchmannstrasse, Renatastrasse, Paulinenstrasse, Wörthstrasse, Bungertstrasse, Drosselstrasse, Frankenstrasse, Ernastrasse, Friedrich-List-Strasse, Elsa-Brändstrom-Strasse, Alexanderstrasse, Jahnstrasse, Schinkelstrasse, the Reulsbergweg and on the Schäpenkamp
- Kamp Linfort: Kamperdickstrasse, Bergmannstrasse and Kamper Strasse
- Karlsruhe: Gustav-Hofmann-Straße, Putlitzstraße, Lessingstraße, Neckarstraße, Sophienstraße and Cäciliastraße
- Koblenz: Mainzer Street
- Constance: Fischenzstrasse and Brandesstrasse

Vodafone offers tenants a special TV contract called “TV Connect”. This contains a total of 97 television programs, including 28 in HD quality as well as regional and foreign language channels. There are also more than 80 radio stations. In order to book “TV Connect Start”, there must be a cooperation agreement between Vodafone and your landlord. As a rule, the price for the tariff is less than 10 euros.
Important! Don’t just conclude something, but first find out from your landlord when the change is planned. As a rule, you will be given several weeks’ notice to prepare for the change.
