Vodafone unifies cable TV frequencies – customers need to know that

From August 2022, Vodafone will standardize the TV frequencies in the fiber optic cable network nationwide. Vodafone is thus aligning the frequency spectrum that has previously been used differently across the network.

As a result, many TV and radio stations will have a different frequency from August. However, Landshut in Lower Bavaria is an exception:

There, Vodafone switched the cable frequencies in the night of June 7th to 8th.

According to Vodafone, the adaptation in the regional TV technology locations (referred to as “hubs”) will be carried out step by step from hub to hub over a period of several months. In April 2023, the frequency reassignment should then be completed for over 13 million cable TV customers. This was preceded by a changeover that had already been carried out in the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg in 2021. In the spring of 2023 the analogue radio stations in the cable networks of NRW, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg will then be switched off.

Vodafone hopes that the nationwide uniform frequency assignment will give more “design flexibility for more performance and higher data rates in the cable fiber optic network”.

That’s what TV customers have to do

Since Vodafone always changes the frequencies at night and most TV devices automatically carry out a channel search, many Vodafone customers should not notice anything about the changeover. Receivers from Vodafone, Unitymedia or Sky as well as “modern television sets” (vodafone quote) should find the channels automatically after the changeover.

Vodafone recommends its customers not to disconnect their receivers and cable routers from the power supply at the time of the changeover and to check in the morning after the changeover whether all channels can be received as before. This should be the norm, especially with Vodafone’s own end devices, since the broadcast slots (LCN numbers) of most broadcasters do not change.

With older receivers from other providers, however, a channel search may be necessary, as Vodafone admits. Depending on the device, it may be necessary to adjust favorites lists and reschedule recordings to get everything working as usual.

Vodafone will inform customers by letter about the time of the changeover.
