The new “Vogue” cover sets an example: Plus-size models are the focus and industry favorites like Bella Hadid are marginal figures.

The models Bella Hadid (24), Kaia Gerber (19) and Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon (24) adorn the cover of the September issue of the US magazine “Vogue”. But the industry favorites are not the focus this time. They are only three among many.

Also on the cover are the Chinese-American model Sherry Shi, the South Sudanese-American model Anok Yai (23), the plus-size models Yumi Nu (24) and Precious Lee (31) and the transgender model Ariel Nicholson (20).

And something else is unusual: the differently dressed group is sitting in the Condé-Nast publishing office in New York City around a desk where an editor is working on the computer.

A lack of diversity is a thing of the past

The magazine has the motto “New Beginnings” and shows models who, according to the magazine, “question the definition of beauty”. The models have been described as “leading an exciting change in the industry” who are redefining “what it means to be influential and visible”.

With the new issue, the magazine has presented its most diverse cover to date, which could counteract its tarnished reputation. In the past, the journalists had come under fire for lack of variety and the promotion of a narrow ideal of beauty.

Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour (71) also faced numerous calls for resignation after she was accused of preferring white, thin employees and allowing discrimination in the magazine.
