Volkswagen announces date for the arrival of the affordable and efficient electric ID.2 GTI

The electric ID.2 will undoubtedly be the star of the coming months at Volkswagen, and all the variations that will result from it, including the sports model, GTI, look very nice. The manufacturer has just formalized its arrival for 2026.

The Volkswagen ID.2, promised as the first “affordable” electric car in its catalog by the German manufacturer, should be presented in 2024 for marketing in 2025.

The one announced at less than 25,000 euros, in base price and before bonuses, is as expected as the Renault 5 E-Tech, except that in terms of bonuses, Volkswagen should be in a cold sweat.

For what ? Because in its preferred market, namely Germany, the government has simply stopped all subsidies with immediate effect ! As a result, the ID.2, if we leave it there, will not have any bonus across the Rhine. In France, in 2025, if the bonus persists, she should have the right to it.

Small but powerful

Still, the ID.2 is going to be big. An electric SUV on the same basis should arrive in the months following its presentation, while a GTI version will appear in 2026.

A first concept car was seen at the previous Munich Motor Show, while Andreas Mindt, the brand’s design boss, has just delivered a first draft on Instagram, alongside the first Golf GTI, an iconic model.

The recipe uses the ingredients of the original GTI, with frankly sportier front and rear shields and fender flares.

If the final technical sheet is not delivered to date, we can count on a power greater than that of the ID. 2 (226 hp), still on the same MEB Entry traction platform. However, you should not expect excessive power. We imagine between 250 and 300 hpwhich is already good for a car that will measure around 4.10 meters.

The competition is waiting for him

Volkswagen should play on other issues, particularly technical, with the integration of an electro-mechanical differential and DCC active suspension. This is enough to give great performance to this model, which will face the future Alpine A290 based on an electric Renault 5 or the new Abarth 500e.

On the battery side, the manufacturer is not more talkative, but let us recall here the data concerning the ID. 2. It is designed for a maximum theoretical WLTP range of 450 kilometers, its battery can be recharged from 10 to 80% in 20 minutes in DC with a charging power of up to 125 kW thanks to a controlled charging curve.

The GTI version will have the same battery, barring any surprises, and the WLTP autonomy should instead be around 400 kmwhich will give around 300 km in real use on expressways, and probably a little less when using it as it is intended to be used, that is to say in sports use.
