Volkswagen finally improves the dashboard of the ID.7

Volkswagen has yet to release much information about the new ID. 7, but two good news are already hiding in the first announcements.

On the occasion of CES in Las Vegas, organized from January 5 to 8, 2023, Volkswagen is revealing a little more about the next ID.7 electric sedan. The car is presented with electroluminescent camouflage paint. However, this is not what you really need to remember from this first public appearance of the large sedan. However, two things draw our attention: an announced autonomy of 700 km wltp as well as a significant evolution of the dashboard (or board) and the on-board infotainment.

On the other hand, it will be necessary to wait for the second quarter of 2023 to discover the final version of the ID.7. That is to say, without its camouflage and with all the technical data for commercialization.

Several changes to the dashboard of the ID.7

With the ID.7, Volkswagen finally changes the presentation of its dashboard. From the ID.3 to the ID.5, all the models in the electric range ended up with the same interior with somewhat divisive ergonomics and style. With its large sedan, Volkswagen returns to a more conventional interior – even if we quickly notice that the spirit remains quite close to the other models in the range.

First visible change: the infotainment screen is larger, it is now 15 inches. Another major change is that information on heating and air conditioning remains visible and accessible at all times. Other shortcuts are appearing at the top of the screen, which should make it easier to navigate between the various vehicle functions. The interface of the other ID models is really not the most successful in this area. Volkswagen seems to have listened to the comments of its customers to develop its most upscale model.

The screen presenting the speeds is again integrated into the dashboard, which reminds us a little of the integration in the Skoda Enyaq iV. The big gear lever commodo disappears at the same time, finally!

A final element is changing significantly: the air conditioning and its adjustment system. Volkswagen uses an air conditioning system quite similar to what Tesla offers. No more manual settings, but settings via the central screen or by voice command. The “Smart Air Vents” function is intended to be smarter and more efficient in heating or cooling the passenger compartment.

Up to 700 km range for the ID.7

The aerodynamics of this large sedan alone does not explain such a significant gain in autonomy, flirting with 700 km wltp according to the first data communicated by the brand.

It is likely that this model incorporates more than the usual 77 kWh battery capacity of other models in the ID range. We will have to wait a few more months to find out more about the definitive characteristics of this model, which will position itself at the top of the ID range.

Between the first images of the ID concept. Aero and this camouflaged version of the ID.7, we can already get an idea of what the model to come has in store for us. However, will it be successful enough to compete with the Tesla Model S? This remains to be discovered.
