By disclosing the ID. Aero, Volkswagen previews the automaker’s first all-electric sedan. A way for him to finally compete with Tesla and its Model 3.

Closely derived from the ID concept. Vizzion first shown at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, the ID. Aero takes up the characteristic features of the all-electric ID family. from the manufacturer, with stretched lights, a full grille and a honeycomb structure on the lower part of the front face. The future model will be positioned in the high-end mid-size sedan segment.

The production version for China is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2023. Volkswagen also plans to start production of a European version in 2023.

“With the ID. Aero show car, we unveil a preview of the next member of the ID family. A car with an emotional and at the same time extremely aerodynamic design, with a range of more than 600 kilometers, extraordinary space and a high interior range,” says Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman and CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

With its curved roof and long wheelbase (in its presentation, the sedan stretches almost 5 m), the VW Aero, which is based on the MEB platform, has a particularly low drag coefficient of 0.23. If the final shape will be a priori Kept for final productions, the illuminated touch-sensitive door handles and front-lit VW logo will likely be replaced with more classic elements. On the other hand, we will find the specific design of the rear lights and the light strip that runs along the tailgate.

According to Volkswagen, the powertrain of the ID. Aero relies on the classic 77 kWh battery of the group and thus claims a range of up to 620 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. A gain a priori interesting since with the same battery a VW ID. 5 offers a WLTP range of 521 kilometers. For the moment, VW does not provide details on the engines. However, we can expect, as with current productions, configurations with one engine and rear-wheel drive or two engines with four-wheel drive. Power outputs are expected to range from 181 to 296 hp.
