Volkswagen has imagined an all-terrain electric concept based on the ID.4 GTX SUV called ID. Xtrem. 387 hp are on the program, but it is not certain that this vehicle will be produced in series.
Known for its international film festival, Locarno is an Italian-speaking city in Switzerland located on the shores of Lake Maggiore. A tourist place which hosted, last weekend, the ID. Treffen, a festival organized by owners of Volkswagen ID electric vehicles.
The event, the first edition of which took place in 2021, is also supported by the German manufacturer, which used this opportunity to unveil some nuggets such as the Combi ID. Buzz Obi Van Kenobi — with the Light Side Edition and Dark Side Edition versions — or the ID.5 GTX Xcite, a show car based on the ID.5 GTX reviewed and corrected by 14 of the best apprentices out of 573 trained by Volkswagen at the production sites in Zwickau, Dresden and Chemnitz.
But the sensation of the moment was the ID. Xtrem, an electric off-roader whose concept was imagined by the Development department of Volkswagen, and more particularly by the team responsible for the MEB platform, dedicated to the group’s electric vehicles.
For this, no need to look very far since the ID. Xtrem is based on the same platform as the ID.4 GTX, the sports version of the ID.4 SUV.
On the menu, a raised chassis like on a rally car, specific off-road tires mounted on 18-inch rims and widened fenders – printed in 3D – by 50 mm. To complete the set and affirm its adventurous look, the ID. Xtrem is decked out with a tiny bullbar, an LED ramp barring the roof located above the windshield and a trim (covering in English) patterned.
Another essential contribution on this type of machine, “a fully streamlined aluminum base” intended to protect the battery against flying stones and other fords.
Increased engine power and battery capacity
If the ID. Xtrem uses the same platform as the ID.4 GTX, the motorization has been revised upwards, the total power of the two engines increasing from 220 kW (299 hp) to 285 kW (387 hp). Ditto for the battery, whose useful capacity is 82 kWh against 77 kWh on the GTX. On the other hand, no data on the maximum speed and especially concerning autonomy, the preservation of which is not the concern.
Finally, in collaboration with the brand’s Design division, a specific exterior sound signature has been created thanks to the addition of a sound generator in each wheel arch.
As for the passenger compartment, Volkswagen did not provide any visuals, contenting itself with describing it with “the presence of numerous upholstery elements in Alcantara, a redesigned seat and elements in the orange contrast color“. In short, we will have to take their word for it.
And now ?
“With ID. Xtreme, we take electric mobility from VW to a new level of performance“, declares Silke Bagschik, responsible for the range of vehicles based on the MEB platform. Beyond this declaration of love, will the ID. Xtrem be marketed in series? Everything will depend on the reception (whether we imagine very enthusiastic) that the participants of the ID Treffen festival will reserve for it. We hope in any case that this concept will be present at the next Paris Motor Show, despite the official absence of the German manufacturer. .
