Volkswagen is the market leader: record number of registrations for electric cars in Germany

Registration record for e-cars in Germany

The e-car offensive of many manufacturers is slowly also being reflected in the registration figures. In 2021, 350,000 all-electric cars are expected to be newly registered. This puts Germany in third place in the international ranking. Not all German carmakers do well here.

According to the Center for Automotive Management (CAM), more and more people drive all-electric vehicles. In total, around 350,000 battery-operated cars will be registered in Germany in 2021, according to an evaluation by the CAM published on Thursday. The market share of new registrations thus almost doubles from 6.7 to 13 percent. The market leader in Germany is therefore Volkswagen, and the CAM experts also expect further growth in 2022.

The trend towards electromobility is picking up speed: In November 2021, with more than 40,000 new registrations, a peak market share of 20.3 percent was achieved, explained the CAM. This corresponds to a doubling compared to the same month last year.

According to CAM, the German market is the world’s third largest market for all-electric vehicles after the USA and China. Volkswagen was the strongest here recently, with a total of around 64,000 battery-operated vehicles sold in the period from January to November. Tesla sold 33,000 electric cars, and Renault (26,000) and Hyundai (24,000) were also able to position themselves on the German market, according to CAM.

According to CAM, there are clear differences in the proportion of electrical equipment in the manufacturers’ total sales: on average, this was 12.8 percent, but individual manufacturers were significantly higher. For Renault and Hyundai, for example, the proportion was 28 and 24.7 percent, respectively. VW, Fiat, Kia as well as Nissan and Honda were also well above average, according to CAM.

Audi and Mercedes are still weak

For other manufacturers, however, the share of all-electric vehicles in new registrations was significantly lower. At BMW, the CAM determined a share of only 6.8 percent, at Audi 7.5 percent and at Mercedes 5.2 percent. This could also mean an economic disadvantage for manufacturers: only manufacturers who have already developed a wide range of electric cars could benefit from the strong growth in demand, said the CAM.

“Germany is positioning itself more and more as an electric vehicle market,” said CAM Director Stefan Bratzel, explaining the figures. If you include the plug-in hybrids, around 680,000 electric vehicles would be on the road in 2021. According to this counting method, Germany is “the second largest market for electromobility,” explained Bratzel.

Overall, according to CAM, the number of new registrations in Germany in 2021 will drop to 2.65 million, the lowest level since 1985. The reason for this is in particular the delivery bottlenecks for microchips. For 2022, however, the experts expect a recovery in the supply chains and a total of around 3.25 million new registrations.
