Volkswagen unveils an ultra-practical electric car with nearly 700 km of range

Here is the station wagon version of the ID.7, it is called Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer. A version which takes on the characteristics of the sedan, while gaining in practicality.

Volkswagen gave station wagon fans and those who want to switch to electric cars a nice surprise by unveiling the ID.7 Tourer. With this new feature, the German brand shows that it knows how to listen to the needs of its customers by offering a vehicle that is spacious, efficient and electric. This is rare enough to point out, given that the SUV is king.

The ID.7 Tourer is not just an extended version of the ID.7 sedan, it is a revised car for those looking for more space without wanting to sacrifice performance or aesthetics. With a chest capable of swallowing everything, up to 1,714 liters of load volume, and the possibility of loading long objects up to nearly 2 meters, this station wagon promises to be a real option for large families. When the rear seat is not folded, we go from 535 to 545 liters of storage. If you recline the rear seats a little, it increases to 605 liters. The boot floor can be lowered, but it is then no longer at the same height as the loading sill.

The ID.7 Tourer stretches 4.96m long, 1.86m wide and 1.54m high, with a wheelbase that borders on 3 meters, giving generous space for both passengers. only for their luggage. Moreover, with its extended roof and a small spoiler at the rear, the ID.7 Tourer seduces us with its look and its aerodynamic profile, displaying a Cx of 0.24 for optimized efficiency (Cd of 0.23 for the ID.7 sedan).

If that’s not enough, you can attach a box (volume of 460 liters) to the roof bars, which can weigh up to 75 kg. A folding trailer hitch is also available, which offers a towing capacity of 1,200 kg and a drawbar load of up to 75 kg for a bicycle carrier.

A large 15-inch screen

Just because you have a large trunk doesn’t mean you should neglect the dashboard. Volkswagen has understood the message by equipping the ID.7 Tourer with a 15-inch diagonal screen that is much more modern than what we are used to seeing from VW. And for those who like to talk to their car, the MIB4 infotainment system integrated with ChatGPT promises some pretty… awkward vocal interactions, certainly. Add to that digital gauges, smaller than usual, and an augmented reality head-up display, and you get a modern cockpit.

Volkswagen also mentions the optional panoramic roof called Smart Glass. The term intelligent is an exaggeration; there are only two states: enabled or disabled. The layer crystals PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) become transparent when an electrical voltage is applied. If the roof is free of tension, the glass becomes opaque, i.e. milky and cloudy.

Two versions available

On the road, the ID.7 Tourer will offer two versions, Pro and Pro S, and it offers enough power: 286 hp and a torque of 545 Nm with a motor located on the rear axle. Concerning autonomy, a crucial point for any electric vehicle and even more so for a station wagon intended to take its passengers far from home.

The ID.7 Tourer should also shine in this area. With its large battery of 77 kWh net (i.e. 82 kWh gross) or 86 kWh net (91 kWh gross), it promises to cover up to 685 km in a single charge according to the WLTP cycle in Pro S version (and 590 kilometers in Pro version). That’s more than enough for long-distance travel without range anxiety. And with fast charging options of up to 200 kW for the Pro S version, 175 kW for the Pro, it can be a very good tourer.

Even if Volkswagen keeps the prices a secret, the ID.7 Tourer is a good surprise. However, the fear we have… is that everything is an option at Volkswagen, even the heat pump (1,150 euros all the same). In addition, in the short term there will probably be a GTX version of other ID models – also for a sporty family car. Which isn’t going to make things any easier.

It remains to be seen how it will position itself against the competition, but one thing is certain: it is a pleasure to see an electric station wagon. If Volvo is listening to us, and other manufacturers, you know what you have to do. Volkswagen joins BMW and Nio. BMW has its station wagon, the i5 Touring, while Nio offers the ET5 Touring.
