(Boursier.com) — volkswagen hopes to dethrone Tesla and become the world’s leading maker of electric vehicles by 2025. Speaking on ‘CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box Europe’ at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Herbert Diess said resolving the Supply chain issues would likely help build momentum for the German auto giant over the coming months.

“The markets are always looking to the future,” said the boss of the German group when asked why investors value Tesla at such a premium compared to other traditional automakers, such as Volkswagen. “Tesla is leading the way right now when it comes to electric vehicles, they’re also probably the most digital automaker and they have some advantages,” he continued. “We still expect to follow them and probably exceed them by 2025 in terms of sales.”

H.Diess explained that Tesla is able to achieve good results and high returns with a credible business model. However, he reaffirmed his belief that Volkswagen could close the gap in EV sales soon. “I think for Tesla as well, the ramp-up will now probably be a bit more difficult. They’re opening new factories and we’re trying to keep up the pace. We think in the second half of the year we’re going to build momentum.”

Asked about the shortage of components and in particular chips which is hitting the automotive industry hard, the leader said he saw “positive signs on the horizon” and expected some improvement from the middle of the year. year: “I wouldn’t say the end, but we see a much improved situation. I think the supply chains are getting back in order”.
