Volkswagen: working on the mobility of the future with Greece

(CercleFinance.com) – Volkswagen announces that the mobility of the future is already becoming a reality on the Greek island of Astypalea with the commissioning of the carpooling service ‘ASTYBUS’ and the vehicle sharing service ‘astyGO ‘, i.e. two mobility services operating exclusively with fully electric vehicles.

The ASTYBUS carpooling service will start operating with five Volkswagen ID vehicles. Buzz as soon as the model is launched, in the fall of 2022. Until then, the service will be operated with the ID.4.

With astyGO, customers can rent electric cars from Volkswagen as well as electric scooters from SEAT MÓ and electric bicycles from Ducati.

Next step? By 2023, a new solar park will provide around 3MW of green energy, covering 100% of the energy needed to charge electric vehicles and more than 50% of the island’s overall energy demand, a figure that is expected to reach 80% by 2026.

The Greek state and the Volkswagen group thus intend to make the island a joint laboratory for rapid decarbonization in Europe.

“A rapid transformation towards green mobility and green energy is achievable if businesses and governments work hand in hand,” insists Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group.
