Volvo is proud to announce the delivery of its new fossil-free electric steel trucks.

But what is it, exactly?
fossil-free steel »?

44-tonne electric trucks at Volvo

At the very beginning of the year, Volvo unveiled its new generation of electric trucks. A few weeks ago, the manufacturer became the first to launch series production of 44-tonne electric trucks. And today, the firm specifies that some of these trucks will be manufactured with ” fossil-free steel “.

According to Volvo Trucks, the road to net zero emissions involves both eliminating the fossil fuels that power trucks, but also those that go into the composition of the materials of these same trucks. For the brand, it is a question of replacing them with low-carbon and recycled alternatives.

Fossil-free steel?

Concretely, the steel without fossil energy comes from the Swedish steelmaker SSAB, which uses a new technology exploiting decarbonized electricity and hydrogen. Initially, this steel will be used to develop the truck side rails. Volvo says: When fossil-free steel becomes available, it will also be used in other parts of the truck. »

Like many manufacturers, Volvo Trucks is obviously committed to respecting the Paris agreement on climate change and to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 at the latest.

Today, in addition to using fossil-free steel, the manufacturer recalls that 30% of the materials in a new Volvo truck come from recycling. Even better, he specifies that at the end of their life, these trucks are able to be recycled up to 90%.
