Volvo Trucks – Amazon buys fleet of electric semi-trailers

The amount of diesel that online retailers use to transport and deliver their goods is immense. Now the largest of them all is making an electric statement: Amazon Germany has bought 20 heavy-duty trucks with purely electric drives.

By the end of this year, Volvo Truck will deliver the cargo Stromer. They are intended to replace diesel vehicles and drive around one million kilometers per year without emissions.Jessica Sandström, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks: “The big players in the transport industry play a crucial role in the entire industry’s efforts to reduce its own ecological footprint . That’s why I’m pleased that Amazon is working with us on the electric drive in the heavy transport sector.” Last September, Volvo Trucks started series production of heavy-duty electric trucks. The company has six electric truck models ready to order and in series production worldwide. MAN and Daimler will only offer series-ready electric heavy-duty trucks for long-distance transport from 2024. The Volvo FH Electric used by Amazon has a continuous output of 490 kW/666 hp, and the range with the 540 kWh battery is up to 300 km. If it is recharged during the lunch break, it should cover a daily workload of 500 km. The 20 trucks are just the beginning. Amazon wants to be CO₂ neutral by 2040.
