Assessment of the teams:
Argentina: Since the botched appearance at the start of the World Cup against Saudi Arabia (1: 2), the Argentines have turned up the heat and are on course for their 3rd World Cup title in history. However, they have to be careful not to lose themselves in side events – a Fifa case after the Netherlands game is still pending. While leader Lionel Messi has found his form up front, the defense is also in place: the “Albiceleste” only allowed 17 shots on target in 5 games.
Croatia: A small country with only 4 million inhabitants, but Croatia could reach the World Cup finals for the 2nd time in a row if they win. “We don’t need to be afraid of anyone,” said defender Josip Juranovic confidently. The Croatians have all won their last 5 knockout matches at World Cups (except for the 2018 final) and only after regular time – when things come to a head, they are there.
Quarterfinal appearances:
France: France are the first team since Brazil (1958 and 1962) to defend the World Cup title. After the quarter-final win against England, match winner Olivier Giroud compared the current mood with that of 2018 in Russia. However, the French are by no means playing the stars in Qatar. It was not the first time in the tournament that the defense was shaky against England. The biggest trumps are the dangerous switching game and the impressive offensive by Kylian Mbappé.
Morocco: Morocco have already made history by becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals. But the fairy tale should go on, even if a huge hurdle awaits with France. The key to success should once again be the irrepressible will and the limitless willingness to sacrifice as well as the defensive with the almost insurmountable goalie Bono. However, several top performers are in danger of being injured.
