Left mayor elected with AfD votes?

Excitement in the Berlin district of Pankow: SPD and the Left break off talks with the election winner Greens and nominate their own mayor candidate. He is also elected to office. But now the question suddenly arises where the majority came from.

In the Berlin district of Pankow, the election of the mayor could have political consequences. Sören Benn was confirmed in office by the Left on Thursday. He received 29 yes votes. 24 MPs voted against him, two abstained. The problem: The AfD representatives claim to have helped Benn to the post.

The SPD and the left together have 23 votes in the local parliament. So the 53-year-old must have received six votes from other parliamentary groups. The “Berlin newspaper“quoted an AfD politician as saying that Benn would not have achieved the necessary majority without her.

The election had already caused a sensation because neither the Left Party nor the SPD emerged victorious in the district on September 26th. Rather, the Greens had become the strongest force – with a claim to the mayor’s office in Pankow. According to the report, however, the SPD and the Left left negotiations with the Greens a week ago. “The green staff could not formulate any clear political priorities for the Pankow district,” the newspaper quoted a participant as saying.

According to the report, Benn reacted indignantly to the question of whether the AfD had helped him into office: “Why should a right-wing party elect a left-wing mayor!” Because you need “a functioning administration” and it has to go on somehow, “said the AfD representative. The FDP meanwhile ruled out having voted for Benn.

Pankow is according to his District Office the second largest district of the capital and with 400,000 inhabitants the most populous.
