A lay committee has been running the Schaffhausen schools for 200 years. Now the system should become more professional.
All Swiss cities have long since introduced school administrations. With one exception: Schaffhausen. Instead, a lay committee runs the schools and kindergartens. It is a 200 year old system.
School leaders have proven themselves
Now the electorate is deciding on a paradigm shift: In the future, school administrations are to take over the tasks of the eight-strong city school board. Schaffhausen rejected this request at the ballot box 13 years ago.
Unlike then, all parties are now behind it. The supporters say that the Schaffhausen schools should be run more professionally. Teachers would be relieved, the schools more attractive.
The system change costs around 1.1 million francs an additional year. SVP parliamentarian Mariano Fioretti, who also sits on the city school board, takes issue with this. The money goes to the administration and not to the school.
But he is alone with this criticism: the city parliament approved the bill with only one dissenting vote.
