Greens chairmen campaign for yes to nuclear power reserve operation

Federal Economics Minister Habeck has been scolded for his plan, but the Green Party chairmen, Lang and Nouripour, are still trying to gain the approval of party members. At the party conference in October, they are supposed to give their yes to the reserve operation of two nuclear power plants.
Green Party chairmen Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour are calling on their party to support Economics Minister Robert Habeck’s plans for operating nuclear power plants as a reserve. “The deployment reserve is a responsible, appropriate, temporary and targeted solution to be prepared for an extreme scenario and to prevent possible network instability in the coming winter,” says an emergency motion by the Greens for the federal party conference in mid-October. The paper is in front of the “Spiegel”.
The federal executive of the party calls for provisions “for the most extreme emergency”, “however unlikely it may be”. “That’s why we agree to create a conditional, time-limited nuclear power reserve that will be strictly monitored by the nuclear regulator,” writes the party leadership.
However, it also sets conditions for the nuclear power reserve: “It can be used in the winter of 2022/23 and only if it is clearly to be feared that the prerequisites for a crisis scenario exist and that a critical situation continues to threaten even if other measures are used,” It says in the motion that the delegates are to vote on right at the beginning of the three-day party conference on October 14 in Bonn.
“Russian government wages economic war”
She justifies her yes to the deployment reserve with Moscow’s policy: “The Russian government has long since started an economic war with Europe with the help of arbitrary throttles or shutdowns of gas supplies,” quotes the “Spiegel”. The failure of numerous French nuclear power plants also endangers the stability of the European power grid in the coming winter. “In addition, due to the grid expansion, which has been delayed in particular by the CSU, electricity, especially from renewable energies, cannot be transported sufficiently from north to south,” writes the Greens federal executive.
However, the decision to phase out nuclear power should not be shaken. “It is crucial for us that no new fuel elements are procured,” writes the party leadership. And: “The nuclear phase-out remains.”
