The film industry is attacking vpn in a new lawsuit in the United States: the VeePN service is accused of promoting illegal piracy.

Among other things, VeePN allegedly promoted the Popcorn Time download software, as well as advertising its service on illegal streaming sites.

VPNs in turmoil

Last year, production companies accused four VPNs of various copyright infringements of their films, including allowing consumers to circumvent the geo-restrictions of platforms like Netflix.

This time, nine plaintiffs accuse the VeePN service of promoting illegal activities like piracy and streaming. It must be said that VeePN calls itself “Popcorn Time VPN”, and its objectives are clear. A page on the VeePN site explains: “ Downloading and sharing files via torrent is copyright infringement. You could be punished by law. That’s why you need a Popcorn Time VPN. »

Ten million dollars in compensation

VPNs allow consumers of pirated content to download anonymously. Although this is not their one and only purpose, they are increasingly being promoted as such, in order to gain subscribers to their services. In addition, on the YTS.movie site, there is direct advertising for VeePN, as was the case with ExpressVPN in the past.

But on the side of VeePN, it would seem that the advertising is the result of a real partnership with YTS, and that the latter is paid for each new subscriber to the VeePN service gained from their site.

The plaintiffs also brought to court charges of trademark infringement, since the titles “Popcorn Time”, “YTS” and “RARBG” were used without permission. Indeed, they belong to 42 Ventures, one of the production companies taking part in the lawsuit.

In all, the plaintiffs seek $10 million in compensation.
