Vrioni with triple pack – WSG Tirol overruns LASK without a chance

WSG Tirol took the lead in the qualifying group on Tuesday with a clear 4-0 home win against LASK. The Tyroleans took revenge for the bitter 6-0 defeat in Pasching at the beginning of the qualifying round of the Bundesliga on March 13 and celebrated their third win in a row. LASK is now three laps before the end, three points behind the Watteners in seventh place, one point ahead of Hartberg and Admira.

In the duel between the teams with the same number of points in the qualifying group before the game, WSG coach Thomas Silberberger made two changes to his team compared to the 2-0 win against Ried on Saturday. Defender Maxime Awoudja replaced Fabian Koch, while Tyrolean top scorer Giacomo Vriono slipped back into the starting XI after his yellow card suspension. Visiting coach Andreas Wieland fielded the same squad as in the 2-1 win against Altach on Saturday. Striker Thomas Sabitzer called for “compensation” for the 6-0 defeat in March in the run-up to the game, and the intention should be right from the start to succeed. After an uneventful initial phase, the home side took the lead in a majority situation when LASK defender Petar Filipovic had to be treated injured. After a long ball from Awoudja, Vrioni escaped James Holland and Oumar Sako and converted past Alexander Schlager to take the lead (11th). Filipovic couldn’t continue with a nose injury, while WSG assistant Awoudja also had to leave the field early with thigh problems. The Watteners were boosted by the lead, Dominik Stumberger headed the ball to the crossbar after a corner kick (18′). LASK found it difficult to get into the game. Rene Renner tested WSG goalkeeper Oswald for the first time from around 30 meters (25th). Just when the people of Linz had recovered a bit, the WSG increased. After a free kick from the half field, Behounek brought the ball back into the middle and Sabitzer, left alone, headed in to make it 2-0 (28′). Wattens played himself into a frenzy. Vrioni overplayed the hit that came out too impetuously, initially failed because of Boller and scored in the second attempt to make it 3-0 (31st). The WSG proved to be highly efficient and shocked LASK in the first half hour. A few minutes later, when Valentino Müller and Vrioni had a double chance, Schlager saved his team from going even further behind. Linzer finally woke up and came close to scoring several times. Boller and Holland tried it first, then Sako failed twice with a header from the well-reacting Oswald. On the other side, Vrioni again missed his third goal of the game (43rd). After the first half, which was rich in highlights, the game fell asleep for long stretches after a change of sides. Sascha Horvath and substitutes Thomas Goiginger and Alexander Michlmayr had Linz’s best chances to score, but only that of young Michlmayr was really compelling. The WSG shifted at least one gear down and primarily tried not to let LASK come into play again. Vrioni, who couldn’t get enough, still had something in the talon and scored the final point (79th) of the game with a precise low shot. It was his 15th goal of the season.
