A researcher has discovered a vulnerability in Sony’s PS5. The exploit uses the PS2 emulator as a point of attack and probably allows you to run your own software.

Google security researcher CTurt has discovered a vulnerability in the PS5’s firmware. For the “mast1c0re” exploit, he uses the integrated PlayStation 2 emulator as a point of attack.
According to him, this is still one of the few components in the system that still has a JIT environment for fast code execution. Sony has removed these elsewhere in the system for security reasons.

Inside the emulator, CTurt uses known vulnerabilities in old PS2 games to “break out” of the emulator. By combining several attack methods, he finally managed to download a PS2 game from the Internet and play it on the console – as the following YouTube video shows.
In another blog post that has not yet been published, CTurt wants to go even further and run self-developed programs on the PS5. However, this post is not online yet.
Since the PS4 has the same emulator, it too is affected by the vulnerability. From a technical point of view, the gap can be closed, but this would cause problems with the topic “backward compatibility”, which is why CTurt assumes that Sony is not doing anything about it. Especially since the exploit can only be exploited with a lot of effort.
