VW and Co. have no chance: Europeans love this electric car manufacturer

While overall car sales continue to decline as a result of several crises, manufacturers of electric cars have nothing to complain about. Electric cars continued to sell well in Europe in March. Above all, Tesla serves large parts of the market. VW and Co. simply cannot keep up.

Tesla pulls the competition away: No other sells as many electric cars

10 percent more e-cars were sold in Europe in March 2022 compared to the same month last year. Overall, the share of electric vehicles in the total volume has risen to 22 percent. This is the result of surveys by EV Volumes, which monitor the international electric car market. Included Tesla is way ahead and can no longer leave the competition behind with just one model.

According to the data from EV Volumes, omitted 10.5 percent of e-car sales in Europe alone are attributable to the US manufacturer. This makes Tesla the current market leader (source: Clean Technica). – compared to the home market, however, still with a small lead. In the United States, 75 percent of all electric cars will be built by Tesla.

In Europe, BMW followed closely with 9.1 percent and Mercedes with 8.9 percent. Tesla’s dominance becomes really clear when you look at the Top 10 electric models on the European market:

  1. Tesla Model 3: 21,198 new registrations
  2. Tesla Model Y: 19,500 new registrations
  3. Fiat 500 e: 6,554 new registrations
  4. Kia Niro EV: 5,319 new registrations
  5. VW ID.4: 5,070 new registrations
  6. Ford Kuga: 4,938 new registrations (plug-in hybrid)
  7. Renault Zoe: 4,273 new registrations
  8. Peugeot e-208: 4,270 new registrations
  9. Hyundai Kona EV: 4,204 new registrations
  10. Audi Q4 e-tron: 4,146 new registrations

Alone Tesla accounts for more new registrations than the rest of the top 10 combined – a single manufacturer currently has no chance against the performance of the e-car pioneer. It remains to be seen, however, whether this will remain the case in the future.

Why you should think about switching to an electric car when you get the chance:

Finally: pure electric cars are overtaking hybrids

Because a change is also underway at Tesla: the growth of the Model 3 – 2021 Germany’s most successful electric car – is weakening. Meanwhile, interest in the Model Y is growing along with the prices Tesla is charging for its electric vehicles.

In addition, the numbers from March 2022 continue a positive trend from an environmental point of view: while pure electric cars continue to be in high demand, hybrids are becoming increasingly rare for buyers. Pure electric cars were 47 percent more registered than in the previous year, while new registrations of plug-in hybrids fell by 22 percent.
