VW Golf in second place – Europe’s best-selling car is a cheap car

The VW Golf has meanwhile lost its subscription to the top spot in Europe’s bestseller list. A brother of the brand leads in another statistic. And Austria’s cheapest new car leads the statistics.

The Dacia Sandero was the best-selling new car in Europe in August. The market observer Jato counted 14,961 new registrations, eight percent more than in the same month last year. Second place went to the VW Golf with 13,664 units (minus 38 percent), and third place to the Toyota Yaris (plus 18 percent).

The most popular electric car in August was the VW ID.3, launched at the end of 2020, with 7904 new registrations. Tesla’s Model 3, which was sold 7,824 times, landed just behind (plus 13 percent). The new VW ID.4 followed by a considerable margin with 4624 new registrations.

Among the plug-in hybrids, the Ford Kuga again took the top position in August, even if 3512 new registrations correspond to a decrease of 26 percent compared to the previous year. The Mercedes GLC followed with 2,670 new registrations (plus 177 percent) and the BMW 3 Series with 2,343 units (plus 96 percent).
