According to Volkswagen, cars with internal combustion engines will be significantly more expensive in the future. The group warns that they could cost up to 5,000 euros more because of the planned Euro 7 emissions standard. Starting prices at 10,000 euros will no longer exist in the future.
VW: Combustion engines more expensive due to emission standards
The new head of the Volkswagen brand, Thomas Schäfer, warns of price increases for cars. Vehicles with classic combustion engines could become noticeably more expensive in the future. The background to Schäfer’s statement is planned EU emissions standard Euro 7, which is noticeable in combustion engines with a more complex exhaust gas cleaning system. Stricter limit values and test methods are part of the standard, which is likely to be introduced by 2025.
According to Schäfer, the hitherto usual entry prices of around 10,000 euros will no longer be possible due to the planned emissions standard. Stellantis boss Carlos Taveres also recently remarked that the middle class “will no longer be able to buy new cars”.
Volkswagen would like to do so from 2025 four e-cars in the entry-level segment to offer. There should be a VW ID.2 and another VW model from the core brand. In addition, an electric car from Skoda and Cupra is expected. The sales price should be “below 25,000 euros” here. A battery range of 350 to 400 km can be expected, which according to Schäfer represents a “psychological sales threshold”.
