“Wagatha Christie”: in the settlement of accounts between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, justice has decided

This is the case that has fascinated the British for three years. After a media trial, justice ruled in favor of Coleen Rooney, who had been attacked by Rebekah Vardy for defamation.

In England, war rages on and off the football pitch… For months, the British (and the tabloids) have been passionate about a surreal story that pitted two wives of players: Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy. Across the Channel, they even found a custom nickname for this legal confrontation, Wagatha Christie, a contraction of Wag and Agatha Christie, the queen of British thrillers who would never have dared to imagine such a story. Back in 2019. At the time, the wife of Wayne Rooney publicly accuses that of Jamie Vardy of having disclosed to the Sun information about his private life. “For the past few years, someone I trusted has been constantly updating the Sun newspaper on my private posts and stories”wrote Coleen Rooney at the time. To flush out the culprit, she restricted her account to one person: Rebekah Vardy.

“Over the past five months, I’ve published a series of fake stories to see if they ended up in the paper. And you know what, they did,” added the wife of Wayne Rooney, “betrayed” by her rival and her agent, who forwarded the documents. In the aftermath, Rebekah Vardy vehemently denied the accusations and suggested that her Instagram had been hacked by a third party. In June 2020, she made the decision to sue Coleen Rooney for defamation. Two years later, the two wags met for ten days for a high-profile trial at the High Court of Justice in London. And this Friday, July 29, they were fixed: the judge ruled in favor of Coleen Rooney. According to DailyMail indeed, the court dismissed Rebekah Vardy’s claim on the grounds that the other party’s statements were “substantially true”. In her verdict that it was “probable” that she was indeed the source of the leaks.

One wag “satisfied” the other “devastated”

“Madame Vardy was aware of this behavior and tolerated it, actively engaging in it”, she added, condemning the wife of Jamie Vardy to pay the legal costs, or nearly 3 million pounds. In the process, Rebekah Vardy published a vitriolic statement in which she accused the judge of having “cheated”. “I am extremely sad and disappointed with the judge’s decision.she wrote. This is not the result I expected, nor what I thought was right. I brought this action to clear my name and I’m devastated by the judge’s conclusion…She got it wrong, and that’s something I can’t accept.” For her part, Coleen Rooney said to herself “satisfied” of the decision while explaining not having “never believed” that the case could be taken to court “when that money could have been much better spent helping others”.
