Walking: 3 good reflexes for my legs: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

Corns and hallux valgus

A podiatrist can remove corns and calluses. While waiting for the appointment, bet on protective bandages. In case of hallux valgus, it is especially necessary to choose rather wide shoes. You can also place a special protection (a kind of sock). Cyril Marchou, podiatrist, recommends wearing a toe spreader, this time made to measure: “It puts the joint back on its axis and relieves pain.”

Joints

Massages and exercises reduce pain in osteoarthritis. One can for example, lying down, bring the knees towards the chest in order to “unwind” the hips and knees. Except during inflammatory crises, walking remains the friend of osteoarthritis. “It notably improves the quality of the fluid in the joint”, emphasizes Professor François Carré. The pain usually goes away on its own after a few minutes of exercise. Prefer flat and uneven routes to avoid shocks to the joints. Also beware of slippery terrain, a fall can happen quickly.

Little extras to adopt

Painkillers taken before the activity help to get moving again. “But they should not be used to push his body excessively,” warns Professor Carré. Support sticks can be invaluable. “They reduce the pressure on the joints by 30%”, confirms Professor Carré. Ask a salesperson for help in choosing the right size… and pick up some tips on how to use them properly.

Thanks to Cyril Marchou, podiatrist and Professor François Carré, cardiologist and sports doctor.
