Wall Street: New records in the wake of Netflix

(CercleFinance.com) – The New York Stock Exchange set new records on Wednesday, benefiting from the solid results of Netflix which reinforce investors’ optimism regarding technology stocks.

At the end of the morning, the Dow Jones rose 0.3% to 38,023.2 points, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.9% to 15,566.4 points.

In earnings news, Netflix unveiled quarterly results well above consensus last night, prompting financial analysts to revise their estimates upwards on the video streaming giant.

With a gain of more than 12%, the stock marks by far the strongest increase in the S&P 500 index at the start of the day.

Almost just as spectacular, the surge of the Dutch equipment manufacturer for the semiconductor industry ASML, which jumped 7% following the announcement of a tripling of orders in the fourth quarter.

AMD’s rebound (+4%) also confirms the current good form of the chip sector, while New Street Research analysts announce that they have switched to buying the processor manufacturer.

The results publication season is now in full swing and the accounts of Tesla and IBM will be closely monitored after the markets close this evening, while those of Intel are expected tomorrow.

The day’s economic indicators are rather robust, with a composite PMI from S&P Global which came to 52.3 in flash estimate in January, a seven-month high, after 50.9 for the previous month.
