Wall Street opens higher, driven by tech

PARIS, Sept 9 (Reuters) – The New York Stock Exchange opened higher on Friday, driven by technology and growth stocks, which are benefiting from renewed investor confidence after falling in recent weeks.

A few minutes after the start of trading, the Dow Jones index gained 204.14 points, or 0.64%, to 31,978.66, the Standard & Poor’s 500 rose 0.78% to 4,037.6 and the Nasdaq Composite took 1.1% to 11,992.75.

The latter is still down just over 9% from its peak in mid-August and the S&P 500 is down nearly 7%.

While the assumption of a new rate hike of three quarters of a point by the Federal Reserve on September 21 remains favored by the market, investors are awaiting the inflation figures in the United States which will be published next week.

In China, monthly price statistics show an unexpected drop in August which could facilitate the implementation of new economic stimulus measures.

Among the major American growth stocks, Tesla won 1.65%, Apple 0.63%, Alphabet 1.13% and Amazon 1.51%.

For its part, the retail group Kroger takes 2.67% after having revised upwards its forecasts of annual results.

The largest increase in the Dow Jones is for the industrial giant Caterpillar, which gained 3.29% after the announcement of an amicable agreement with the tax authorities on a dispute relating to the period 2007-2016.
